Fools and Fixers

I found this a few days ago, but wanted to wait until today to post it since the whole thing is based on pranking. Axe has unveiled the The Fixer Show promoting their menhancing shower products and encouraging you to prank your buddies based on everything from questionable hookups to the morning after.

"Pranking...rhymes with spanking!"

I tried one of one the lamer/easier ones out:

Here's the commercial promoting the site. It's pretty cool:

And here's a link to their youtube channel. And one of my favorite wake up prank videos. It's impressive but even more so is the location. Where the hell are they? Southeast Asia? The Amazon? I want a sweet hammock like that on my balcony!

Kudos to Axe and Mekanism. I could think of some other common guy problems I would like them to fix...

A Recent DisCovery

Has anyone else seen the latest Cover Girl commercials on TV featuring Ellen DeGeneres?

I was all kinds of surprised. I mean, I know they've been branching out from the stereotypical supermodels that graced the ads when I read Seventeen magazine in high school by using Drew Barrymore and Queen Latifa recently. But they are actresses, not a far reach from models.

Ellen is in a whole nother league occupationally, generationally and sexual orientationally. (I may have made up that last word.) I do have to admit she is pretty and it's cool to see someone outside the glamorous celeb-o-sphere endorsing beauty products. Also interesting is that CG is partnering with a semi-rival brand, Oil of Olay. (I say semi-rival because I feel like they only have products for my mom).

Methinks this Cover Girl campaign is at least a little bit influenced by the Dove Real Beauty revolution. After all, they're only separated by an aisle or two at Target.

Sidenote: I've always wondered who wrote their ridiculous tagline: Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, Cover Girl. So basically if you wear the makeup you are promiscuous and an airhead, but hey, you'll be pretty because that's all that matters. lol.

Supermodelquins Debut!

Sure am glad I started following Alex Bogusky on twitter...

The writing is fantastic and the concept is hilarious. Very Crispin.
I remember seeing some supermodelquins comps when I was there last quarter. I thought they looked a bit creepy. I'm glad to finally see how this stuff is getting produced!

The supermodelquins are also starting to emerge on the Old Navy website:

>>>UPDATED 03/01/09
Here's an article about the "kitschy" new campaign on Ad Age.

Don't forget to check out Old Navy Weekly, the gossip magazine spoof where you can find hidden coupons for ON stuff.

Here's the denim derrieres commercial:

And they're also establishing a loyal following on facebook. Understandably a lot of people think the supermodelquins are creepy but that's also what they said about the king...

Let's Face It

I like the idea behind Dentyne's new Make Face Time campaign by McCann Erickson, even though the executions are a little too mushy for my personal taste. Who would have thought just a few years ago that we'd see a campaign that encourages people to interact in person again?

My favorite part of the campaign is the website - it kicks you off after 3 minutes, but of course they will give you extra time if you want to further promote the brand...

Reality is Truth

I saw one of the first public commercials for Crispin's new 'Reality' Campaign:

Earlier this week at the agency I saw a bunch of 'clean coal' facts plastered all over the walls. So far it seems like the exact same campaign as Truth, except they changed the topic from smoking to coal burning and global warming. Don't get me wrong, though. I loved the Truth campaign. In fact, that's one of the reasons I love the agency, they have the same values as me in general: anti-smoking, recycling, environmental preservation, physical fitness, etc.

I'm excited to see how this campaign unfolds. CP+B loves their PR! I wonder if this is pro bono.

The website makes me a little sad, but at least you get to bring the canary back to life each time! After seeing the website, I now understand why they used the yellow bird as a mascot.

I remember learning this at some point:
Early coal mines did not feature ventilation systems, so miners would routinely bring a caged canary into new coal seams. Canaries are especially sensitive to methane and carbon monoxide, which made them ideal for detecting any dangerous gas build-ups. As long as the canary in a coal mine kept singing, the miners knew their air supply was safe. A dead canary in a coal mine signalled an immediate evacuation.

Here's the print ad that's been released:

Everything is so simple, which is why it's so brilliant.

“Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.”

"Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.”

Campaign for Color

Ok pink is for breast cancer awareness, yellow is for Lance Armstrong/Livestrong, red is for AIDS. Colors keep getting branded, and now Yahoo is attempting to claim the color purple.

I went to the website and it's kind of interesting and very interactive, but I don't see much of a point. According to Yahoo, the idea behind their purple campaign is "[to embrace] individuality, fashion, style, art and personality."

The campaign's official theme song "Start Wearing Purple" by Gogol Bordello. This guy is totally a musical version of Borat.

Co-branded with Flickr and Electra, the Purple Pedals Project chronicles the life of a camera-mounted bikes which post pictures from their point-of-view every 60 seconds.

Maybe eventually people will associate purple and Yahoo, but I don't think it's reached the success of the aforementioned spectrum. I guess they're trying to compete with the behemoth creature that is Google.

Still, I might try to throw on a purple shirt tomorrow or something. Do I even own a purple shirt?

carfun footprint

and sooner or later, you'd expect some agency to get ahold of this carbon footprint idea and apply it to something they're advertising. well this is what bssp (butler, shine, stern and partners) in sausalito, california have done. read more about the up coming campaign. and don't forget to take the quiz to figure out your "carfun footprint," which measures how fun your car is to drive as well as how environmentally friendly it is. (again, i don't have a car, but i based it on silver bell, my trusty mustang, who i drove until i moved to miami).
i love the simple design and the classic announcer's voice!

a peek into windows

so, now we know cp+b's big advertising plan for microsoft. well, kind of. according to this article, they are going to feature jerry sienfeld and bill gates. and the tagline is going to be something like "windows, not walls." i'm excited to see these ads when they come out in september!
it's gonna be hard to top the mac vs pc ads...
speaking of which, here is the newest one:

"come eat me! i'm a delicious pizza!"
hahaha
