The Chicken, The Egg, or Social Networking?

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
WHOA!
Since when could you start recording videos through YouTube?

I saw this little button when I was uploading this completely random video I found buried within my hard drive from my days on the squad (sidenote: why are cheerleaders the only ones on a 'squad' when pretty much every other athlete is considered part of a 'team?').

Anyways, I was pretty sure this wasn't possible a few months when Aron & I concepted and submitted our future lions campaign idea for Hallmark which included mass video greeting cards on which you can upload yourself instantly.

But when I investigated further, I got stuck in YT limbo, clicking on the same two links a few times before I figured it out it wasn't going to work...Is it not functioning because I'm on a Mac or because I need to register for/download something or is it just plain not functional yet?

Can anyone enlighten me on this subject?

I ran into a similar scenario recently when I was simultaneously posting a tweet on my iPhone and driving (was technically in the backseat at the time - not literally driving) from home in South Carolina back down to Miami. I was suddenly inspired and posted this:

"Just crossed the border into Georgia! I want to invent a roadtwip app using twitter and gps/google maps!" 12:11 PM Jun 17th from TwitterFon

And out of nowhere someone replied to that tweet last week:

"KurtyD@sevenmir your roadtwip sounds fun. check out what we did http://roadtwip.us/bk.html c'mon!1:14 AM Jun 29th from web"

It's exactly the same name. I mean I guess it's not THE most original thought ever, but still. The internet is so incestuous.

The Aftermath

This may or may not have been the one second ad. I'm not 100% sure because I didn't see it myself yesterday. I must have blinked.

Once again I was disappointed overall with the Superbowl commercials this year. It just doesn't have the same prestige as years past. Thanks to Ad Blitz, you can vote for your favorite superbowl commercials through their YouTube channel til wednesday.

Some that I was close to liking:

That Time Again

Yep. Time for pre-Christmas overload. An over-indulgence in shopping, seasonal songs and traveling. I actually heard my first Christmas song on the radio last weekend. I swear it starts earlier every year. I mean, the day of Halloween I saw Christmas decorations sprouting up at Target and Walmart. As for my shopping and traveling, I bought most of my friends' Christmas presents when I was in Europe and I have my flight home all set for December 21.

Starbucks turns their coffee cups red every Chrismas anyways, but this year they are partnering with the (Product) Red Campaign. Their website has been counting down the days until the caritas cups are launched on November 27.

Five cents from the purchase of every Starbucks Red Exclusive beverage, which includes the Peppermint Mocha Twist, Gingersnap Latte and Espresso Truffle, will go to the Global Fund to support AIDS programs in Africa. It kind of coincides with December first, which is World AIDS Day.

This attractively art-directed ad by BBDO is all over YouTube:

There's even a Facebook event that uses peer pressure to make you want to go:

I personally can't wait for the Hot Chocolate and Caramel Apple Cider! I'm not really a fan of coffee.

my new haircut...commercialized

yea, this video is super-old in you-tube years (just over one year old in reality) but it is still one of my favorites. maybe because it describes like one out of every three guys that went to my university. it has almost 19 million hits, but i'm still surprised that it's spawned an online merchandise site. i'm even more surprised that i kind of want to buy something from it.

and my favorite knock-off, my new haircut: asian edition by the duke university improv.

i think after the number of hits a video has, another measure of success is how many imitations it inspires.
