whale watcher-outers

yes! another great animal welfare campaign that doesn't involve pictures/videos of dead/dying animals. it's a campaign by republic of everyone (sydney) for ifaw to stop whaling in japan.

its called project 551 because according to their statistics, this year the japanese government killed 551 whales in the southern ocean whale sanctuary. these print ads are from this month and involved a dozen photographers and 26 'familiar faces.' i guess some of these people are supposed to be famous, but i don't recognize any of them.

simply interactive and in my opinion, effective. and of course a signature hand gesture of some sort always helps a campaign out.

i went ahead and took my picture and added it to their flickr site (partially because photobooth is so convenient.) when i uploaded my picture, they already had 553 submissions. apparently all the photos are going to be put in a book and given to the rudd government at the end of the campaign (kevin rudd is the prime minister of australia). is it just me, or wouldn't it be more effective to give it to the japanese government?

check out the website and add a picture too!

gah, my hands really are big.
and now that i really look at these pictures, there's a few inconsistencies. the first girl, wearing fur? the asian guy, with dead fish? i'm pretty sure the fur industry and commercial fishing industry do not promote animal welfare. whales must be the most important because they are the biggest, and most endangered.
