The Wheel. Reinvented.

I saw this a couple weeks ago and I finally decided it was worth posting up here. I love how great this story is. Even down to the advertising in the background. So Apple.

Apple Love

Usually I hate commercial mesages in my inbox, but this one was so pretty...

Yep, I am officially an Apple Whore. I have the whole collection now: Macbook, iPod and iPhone.
Steve Jobs, will you be my valentine?
LoL

Nuts for Change

Really? Ben and Jerry's came out with a new flavor called "Yes Pecan?"

It seems that B&J's is some sort of new advertising medium for charitable causes (I posted about their ONE Cheesecake Brownie flavor a few months back). I guess its a noble endeavor and Lord knows our education system can always use the help. Their main promotion channel is through Facebook.
Hmmm... I wonder who old Ben and Jerry voted for last November...

At least it supports my opinion that the pronunciation is "pee-can" rather than "peh-kahn."

Commercial Culture

Advertising often crosses cultural borders. I think if an idea is really good, it can be universal. Here's an example by Sprite:
The Chinese version:

And the US version, which I don't remember ever seeing here.

I'm not sure which one came first but I think the Chinese one is better. I like the song for it too.

I discovered these when I was looking for that classic Sprite Anti-Ad, where that NBA dude, Grant Hill I think, blatantly endorses the product and little dollar signs pop up everytime he mentions the brand... Which was inspired by the fact that Mountain Dew is our next client for my Account Planning Projects class.

Virgin/Sacrifice

You know a campaign is successful when SNL parodies it...

At the risk of sounding like a Crispin-worshiper, I just have to add a quick post about the Whopper Sacrifice Facebook Application.

I had no idea about this once again brilliant idea until I got this message from this jerk that went to my University (yet never graduated):
"Miranda is #2 on my way to a free Whopper. I'm glad I didn't de-friend you earlier for no reason. Expect a message from Burger King soon.
Not that I'm sad to see him go. The only good thing that came out of this was that I found out about the FApp. (Facebook + Application). The FApp must have been deactivated soon after because I was not actually de-friended, and was able to send this response:
"Wow. I'm surprised you have at least 10 friends to sacrifice in the first place!"
Yea.
Then, there's the Angry Gram, in which you can send a somewhat personalized hostile, animated whopper to your victim of choice.

There must be a lot of Harry Potter fans on this account b/c it reminds me exactly of the berating letter that Ron's mother sent him at Hogwarts after he stole and crashed the flying car during second year. Yes, I am a little bit of a HP fan.

I love the fact that the whole time I was there, they were like "No Facebook Apps, No microsites. They are so overdone. They all suck." I guess what's the use in having rules unless you can break them (if your idea is good enough). Not to mention I don't remember any other brands using animosity as an emotion to associate with, let alone promote, their brand.

Sugar and Spice

This first part of the post is pretty much for MM! I found this sweet site, for the love of sugar, when I was working on a recent project. I want ladybug cupcakes!

I also found a leaked picture of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland, which is currently filming.

And this hilarious video of Natalie Portman on SNL. I have to write & perform a song and shoot a music video for my 'Brand Called You' class, and I was thinking of a slightly less intense but equally as entertaining rap video.

Brand Gossip

A couple days ago, two women from the New York Times presented the brief for our final project in the Account Planning Bootcamp class. They made an interesting point. In regards to your brand, people are either talking with you, or behind your back.

They mentioned this website called Brand Tags where you can see a little bit of both. You can also voice your own opinions on various brands. The bigger the word, the more people believe that about that brand. I just wish it was a little more colorful, but it's cool nonetheless.

Here's what people are saying about Apple:

Some of my campaigns would have been much easier from concept to compeltion had I known about this website sooner!

Anyone Can Be An Artist

I'm sad to say there are probably going to be significantly less posts than usual for the next couple months due to my insane workload at school this quarter. But I am excited to most likely be posting the results of this madness.

Anyways, Here's a cool link that my friend Julio introduced me to: www.jacksonpollock.org. Jackson Pollock was the dude that perfected paint dripping as part of the abstract expressionist art movement. It's not my personal taste, but the website is super fun. I kind of know Flash, and I have no idea how this works. It's surprisingly realistic, except for the occasional big blobs of 'computer paint,' which kind of remind me of balloon animals.

A New Point of View

Found this spot randomly on Ads of the World. It's so simple: seeing the world from the point of view of a champagne cork.

I kind of like it. This fun little extra was posted below it:
And now that you've seen the spot, maybe you can answer the quiz:

What's for dinner?
What's the old woman in the mirror doing?
What's the creature on the topless body builder's shoulder?
What's the liquid in that metal tub?

Also saw these:

Apparently these ads came from my very own Miami Ad School here in South Beach (where, by the way, it is a delightful 76 degrees with almost clear skies). The ads are pretty nicely art directed (with the exception of that drop shadow on the text). The art director is Roberto Salas, copywriter is Sachi Brown and the instructor is Manuel Huici. I haven't heard of any of these people but maybe I'll start uploading some of my own work to the website. Who knows what might happen...

Coraline

My last post was fun and airy.
My latest one
may seem a bit scary.
This website promotes Coraline,
Which is coming to theaters
in a very short time.

Check out the website. I like how simple the interaction is: Drop buttons over your eyes. That's it.
Here's the latest trailer:

The movie is based on Neil Gaiman's international & New York Times best-selling children's novel of the same name (released in 2002). The film is a combination of stop-motion and 3D graphics. It's been in a painstaking production for the past three years and a lot of the sets are handmade.

The main character is voiced by Dakota Fanning and is directed by Henry Selick, who did the Nightmare Before Christmas. It makes me think of a more modern, darker version of Alice in Wonderland. So of course I want to see it when it comes out next month!

Modern Princess

Since my new favorite fragrance right now is Princess by Vera Wang, I decided to check out the website. I fell in love with the art direction. I like the hand-made, organic feel of it. Camilla Belle was chosen to be the official spokes-starlet for the product and got to do a beautiful photoshoot.

And who doesn't love a good quiz? At the website, click on begin your reign to find out what kind of princess you are. I love the illustrations! They remind me of fashion sketches painted over with watercolors.

The only thing I don't love about this site is the fact that a lot of the 'goodies' don't work, i.e. the wallpapers and myspace templates. Which reminds me, I should probably just delete my myspace account since I never use it. I've always preferred facebook.

New Year, New Logo

Here's the first commercial I saw in 2009 right after I watched the ball drop:

Great timing, considering everyone tries to 'start fresh' each new year, and this is the first I've seen of the new logo/packaging in advertising.
The website, refresheverything.com, just replays the commercial and wishes you a Happy New Year again. It's very bright and colorful, a big change from their standard shades of red and blue. They finally have the new designs showcased on pepsiusa.com as well.

And you can brush up on the history and design of the product/logo.

I still don't like the fact that the logo isn't completely consistent throughout the product line but the new packaging is pretty cool overall.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Y'ALL!
